Rooted in the region's complex history and shifting political landscapes, Baltic cinema is a fascinating blend of historical context, cultural exploration, and artistic expression. Festival highlights include:
- Smoke Sauna Sisterhood, the festival’s opening film, winner of World Cinema Documentary directing award (Anna Hints) at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and Estonia's official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards®.
- The Poet, a thrilling drama inspired by the true and unique story of the betrayal of the Lithuanian partisans.
- January, a coming-of-age story of an aspiring filmmaker against the backdrop of Latvia's peaceful fight to regain its independence in 1991, winner of Best Film, Best Director (Viesturs Kairišs), and Best Actor (Kārlis Arnolds Avots) at Rome FF.
- Slow, from Lithuania, Maria Kavtaradze’s Sundance-winner, nominee at this year’s European Film Awards and Lithuania's official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards®, a relationship story of two 30-year-olds.
- Soviet Milk, based on true events and the global bestseller by Latvian author Nora Ikstena, a female-led drama about resilience and sacrifice set against the backdrop of Soviet-occupied Latvia & spanning four decades from 1945 to 1989.
- Kalev, inspired by a true story, a gripping sports biopic about the Estonian elite basketball team Kalev during the summer of 1990.
Festival-goers will have a unique opportunity to dive deeper into the films during Q&A sessions which will follow each of the six screenings. Access to all Q&A sessions will be open to ticket holders and included in the ticket price.
